Great Game Being Based on A FilmSep 08, 2010 Usually, I wouldn't go near a game that has been released in conjunction with a film; however, as soon as I saw the trailer for the Toy Story 3 game, I could tell it was much better than the average 'game of the film'.
You play as Woody, Buzz or Jessie, and each of the characters have their own 'special move' which comes in handy when playing the different levels in the game. Woody has a `lasso' tool, which allows him to lasso his string onto hard-to-reach objects, and pull himself up. Buzz can throw other characters far; this allows Woody and Jessie to access otherwise hard- to-reach places. Finally, Jessie's special move allows her to balance on small objects which Buzz and Woody can't - this is necessary in some missions to help the other characters progress. Within missions, you can switch between the three characters, using a command button, so that they can use all of their special moves to complete the level.
I have to say, though, that the Toy Box mode is much more fun than the rest of the game. Different characters provide you with various 'missions', some easy, some more difficult. These missions are given by characters from the films that reside in different zones within Woody's Roundup. The first is Sid's Haunted House; and here, the missions are given to you by Rex. There is a special level in each zone, and this one takes you inside the Haunted House (including `Grim Grinning Ghosts', playing as background music!). There are various tasks to complete within the house, but nothing too hard.
The second zone is the Enchanted Glenn, with Lotso Huggin' Bear dishing out the missions. The level within this zone involves you riding a fire-breathing dragon, which is quite fun, but also a little tricky!
The third and final zone is Zurg's Spaceport. This one isn't quite as fun as the Enchanted Glenn, as Zurg doesn't give you many missions; therefore, the best part is the special level. As with the other special levels, it involves completing tasks to reach the end.
Another part of the map in Woody's Roundup is Slinky's Farm. Slinky provides many missions, and you can also do some cow-tipping here if you are in that sort of mood! A
PS3 exclusive is that you can play as Zurg, and it is in Slinky's Farm that you can go inside a Zurg transforming machine, and come out and play as Zurg. This isn't as much fun as it sounds because Zurg is not as agile as the other characters; he lacks knees, meaning that he cannot jump too high, and he refuses to grab onto ledges.
An added feature in Toy Box mode is the ability to access a stunt park and racing tracks. This is probably something that little boys would enjoy more, but we will come to what girls will like most a little later on! Within the parks and tracks, there are many different challenges which will keep the family occupied for a decent amount of time.
One of the features of Toy Box mode that is mostly one for the girls is that you can customize buildings and townspeople. On the buildings, you can change the color of the walls and sidings, the decorations, and porch accessories. The tailor's shop allows you to change the clothes, hair and hats of the townspeople, as well as allowing you to turn them into certain selected Pixar characters! You can also dress up the green aliens, which in my opinion, is rather amusing.
There are many items to collect throughout the game, which will earn you special Pixar-related items in the main menu, as well as gold stars and trophies/achievements. As for problems with the game, it does have a fair amount of noticeable glitches, which seemed to get worse as the game progressed. Quite a few times characters would get stuck in mid air or in the ground, and you have to restart the game to get things back on track.
Glitches aside, this is a very good game, very much fun to play and not too stressful. Some parts are tricky, and it does seem to help to play with two players, which would probably be beneficial if you are playing with a child. So, overall, I would definitely recommend this game to anyone considering buying it, it is worth the pennies!
This game is FUN!!! Definitely recommended for parents and their children (to play together)Sep 07, 2010 When it comes to animated classics, "Toy Story" is definitely one title that is among a great group of titles. Also, it was the first film for the CGI animation company Pixar, who would become the tour-de-force of creating animated CGI hits such as "A Bug's Life", "Cars", "Monsters, Inc.", "Finding Nemo", "The Incredibles", "Up", "Wall-E" to name a few.
The first film was released in 1995 and in 2010, the third film was released. Many people who grew up with the first two films as children or teenagers are now parents who have children and another generation of children to experience "Toy Story 3" and another video game dedicated to the popular film.
Like many parents who grew up with the previous two films, it was cool to watch this film with my son and now to play the video game together. And the first thing that came to mind was that this game is perfect for parents and children to play together as a team, especially with its co-op mode.
So, I'll give my review targeted more for the parents and those with younger children.
To describe "Toy Story 3", it's like a mix of video games that we have enjoyed in the past. The main storyline takes place after the events of "Toy Story 3" and thus the game takes place in Bonnie's bedroom and laid out is a map. Various toys from the film are telling their own stories and as a player, you get to partake in that story. Beat the level, you open up another area to visit on the map.
And there are two games that you can partake in on the map. TOY BOX MODE and STORY MODE.
In TOY BOX MODE, this game may be for the teens and adults and older children but not for younger children. The object is similar to a Sims, Animal Crossing type of game where you must be the sheriff (you can play as Woody, Buzz or Jessie) of the town and maintain duties by making money to purchase buildings, helping towns people with their problems and making the town thrive and protecting it from criminals, gargoyles or pixies. This is a pretty massive game in itself and can be played anytime. It's important to note that items found on story mode or items purchased at Al's Toy Barn will be added to the Toy Box Mode. While certain modes will require parents to play for their children, there are a lot of games where children can just roam around and have fun.
NOTE: There is one scene where you can access a Haunted House and it's a very cool level in TOY BOX MODE but requires precision jumping and wand shooting as gargoyles go after you and puzzles which parents and older kids/teens can figure out but it may be too difficult for children (the level may scare some children). But a level with awesome music!
In STORY MODE, this is where you play games that correspond to a character's imagination/story. In each story, there are hidden items, secrets that you will want to obtain (if you want to add clothing or people to the TOY BOX MODE, money to buy toys at Al's Toy Barn and for those who want to get trophies for their PS3 game). The following are games that can be played and opened up (note: No matter if you die or get hurt, you have unlimited lives):
TRAIN RESCUE: Woody need to save orphans while the evil Dr. Porkchop is trying to stop him. This level gives the player familiarity with the controls but also is a game where parents will want to play along with their children as young children may find this game a bit too hard for them. You are literally racing against time and you must control Woody on a horse and jump through cliffs and then using double jumps and dodging techniques.
ANDY'S HOUSE: The toys want Andy to come and play but he needs to be called. So, the first part requires you to work with Woody, Buzz and Jessie in trying to get the cell phone and the second part, using the three to find the army men to call up Andy by utilizing another phone. This may require parents to help their young children as there is a good amount of jumping in this game, jumping from long distances and tossing people to high levels.
BUZZ VIDEO GAME: This game is similar to classic flying shooter games where you control Buzz and shoot down asteroids while you are flying and trying to dodge rocks. The second part of the game is where you must jump around in space from platform to platform and defeat the evil robots. The third part of the game involves timing and precision while you try to go against Zurg and survive in his space machine. This is actually a bit tough and may require the parent to beat the game, as young children may have a hard time with this game.
SUNNYSIDE DAY CARE: In this game, you need to play three games and do well in order to open up the next level. This may be easy for children. The first game is like a Space Invaders/Centipede game titled "Alley Throw" where you must prevent the aliens from crossing the line and you must peg them with a bean bag (unlimited). The next game "Teeny Racer Challenge" is riding a mini car and ramming 10 blocks and the third game "Horseback Balloon Pop", you control Bullseye and try to jump and pop up to 25 balloons.
BONNIE'S HOUSE: In this game, Bonnie comes up with a story of a wicked witch who has flooded the area with caffeine. You must use Woody's grabbing and jumping techniques in the first game and the second requires you to surf on a wire and find the batteries to launch a rocket to escape. This is a fun level that requires precise jumping and may be too difficult for children.
PRISON BREAK: You must use Woody and Jessie to rescue your friends who have been jailed. Unfortunately, Buzz has been programmed to be against you and you must use stealth and hiding techniques to make sure you are not detected by him and roaming cars with headlights in the dark. This will be too difficult for young kids who are not used to the concept of stealth/hiding especially as the controls may get a bit wonky at times during this game.
JUNKYARD: Save the aliens from being killed and then save your friends from the junk yard and utilizing Woody, Buzz and Jessie together to save your friends. Definitely not for the children as this requires a lot of precision jumping.
HAUNTED BAKERY: Continuing the witch from Bonnie's House, you must use Buzz to use lasers against evil bakery goods and witches who are trying to destroy the town. Utilize buzz to shoot down the bad guys but find special items and two huge lasers to defeat the enemy. May require parents help as it does get chaotic and you will die a lot in the game (fortunately, you have unlimited life in these games).

GRAPHICS & AUDIO: The graphics are awesome! Colors are vibrant and it's a game that looks absolutely fantastic via 1080p. Audio is also impressive as I noticed quite a bit of surround usage for ambiance and sound effects while the front and center channels provide crisp and clear audio with the various music in the game.
CONTROLS: Controls are good but some games such as "PRISON BREAK" where you will need to move around in circles, can get quite bothersome by some camera issues. But controls are easy for parents and children to utilize.
REPLAYBILITY: Because this game is one of the few games where players can possibly get an easy platinum via trophy's, re-playability is there if you want to find everything.

JUDGMENT CALL:
I was pretty surprised by this game. I thought it would be decent children's game based on the "Toy Story 3" film but I was wrong. The various games and the different styles of games included are fantastic. Granted, for adults and teens, it may be a bit simple but don't get me wrong, there are some games that really test your patience and games where you will be dying a lot. Even if you are good at video games.
For parents with young children, this is a great game where you can work together with your child in beating a game. My 7-year-old son found the games a bit hard and rather watched me beat some of them, but he absolutely loved TOY BOX MODE in which he can roam around and have fun. This is actually an awesome mode for them to learn the controls as well.
But overall, this is a very awesome game and anyone who loved the films or even the older games, will be amazed of how fun "TOY STORY 3" is. Unfortunately, I can't give the game a 4.5 but I suppose I'll give it a 5. The reason is mostly due to its controls and the camera for the game. Sometimes it takes quite a bit of adjusting but I've played games with bad camera and this is not one of them.
Overall, "TOY STORY 3" is a very fun game, great for parents and children to play together and definitely recommended!
Good family fun, great graphics and cooperative playSep 05, 2010 This is a very well done family friendly video game. Disney did not skimp on quality at all. The game looks great and will provide hours and hours of challenging fun for young kids. One of the nice features is 2-person cooperative play. It is a well done enough game that a young child and parent or two childern of different ages can enjoy it. Perhaps not the first go to game for an adult but for who it is intended for a very well done game.
The game has 2 different ways to play. One is a more arcade/puzzle challenge stages that is very diverse and covers almost all the characters of Toy Story 3 in different environments. The stages all contain hints and cooperative play where you will have to use at least 2 different characters to accomplish a goal. If you are playing by yourself you move one character then the other. The hints are a nice feature for younger kids (heck for me too, sometimes I like to work things out sometimes I just want to get to the next stage).
You also have a town where you can do short tasks for different townspeople and earn credit to customize the town environment. It is a 'free play' part of the game. I really love the graphics. They are completely authentic to the movie. Overall a great choice to get for any Toy Story 3 fans in your household with the added bounus that an adult and child can play together and both have a very good time. Recommended.
Fun even on its ownSep 05, 2010 I've enjoyed the first two Toy Story movies, but I haven't yet seen the third, so I was a little concerned about enjoying this game on its own. No need to worry: it's essentially a completely standalone video game, using the toy characters.
It starts (very quickly, I might add -- put down that snack!) with an action rescue sequence. You're Woody and must stop a runaway train holding a bunch of captive orphans. There's lots of running, dodging, and jumping, and eventually throwing balls at targets. I am really, really bad at a video games that rely on coordination, so this part was a bit tough for me. Fortunately you can take few hits, and progress is autosaved after each section, so after a dozen or so attempts I made it through.
After the action opening, there's a little movie, then you pick a character to play for Toy Box mode. In this part, you wander around a little town, doing quests and jobs for residents. You can also mine for gold, paint and decorate houses, dress up the other toys, and generally explore and have fun.
Overall, this is a great game. Very cute, charming characters, good variety. I had (as I said) some trouble with the parts that require coordination, and got a little nauseated in the Toy Box part with the camera motion, but I'm a huge wimp. It's an excellent game.
If this kind of game looks at all interesting to you, you won't be disappointed.
AWESOME. My 6yo LOVES it!(i do too)Sep 04, 2010 I was happily surprised by Toy Story 3 for the PS3. 9/10 times a movie that is made into a game for kids is crummy and lame, however this game has SO much to explore. I thought it would be hard for my 6yo who has only played on the Wii up until this game but he caught on very quickly with the new controller and had very few problems navigating the game. I have had to help him with particularly hard missions but he has been able to do 95% of it himself. I was unsure since this game is for 10+. My son however has beaten Super Mario Galaxy several times and well as New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, etc so he's pretty good at games. This game has so many diverse missions and its not the same thing over and over. I play video games(starcraft, final fantasy, call of duty) and i was impressed by it. Get this for your kid if they love Toy Story and challenging games. The best age range i would say is 8. By 8 i think most if not all kids could play this without any adult help. I will occasionally ask my son if i can do a few missions and i have fun doing them.
