5Mage Knight 2.0...best miniatures gameOct 12, 2009
Mage Knight is a clickable miniatures wargame from Wizkids. Unlike other miniatures games, Mage Knight does not require charts and books because the stats for each mini are on the figure itself. Also, as the figure takes damage, you click the base revealing new (and usually lesser) stats.

Mage Knight is the brain child of famed miniatures designer Jordan Weisman. Weisman designed Battle Tech and other FASA games before moving out onto his own. Mage Knight was the first game published by Wizkids; and it is the best in my opinion.

Players build army using a pre-build total that they agree upon. Each figure has a point value. Players then construct their armies to create a formidable fighting force. There are many factions which gives players a lot of flair in deciding how to create their armies.

Each starter box comes with the rules, special ability card, ruler, dice and an assortment of figures. Mage Knight is a collectible game so each starter and booster is different. When buying the 2.0 starter, you will receive Kieran Starsdawn, a limited edition unique. Note: some 2.0 starters have Kieran's brother Gabriel Starsdawn instead. Both are worthy figures.

The rules for Mage Knight are so straight forward you will be baffled by why you ever tried any other miniatures game. Each figure has an attack value, defense value, move value and a damage value. When you attack an enemy unit, you decide which figure will attack and which figure will be the target. Roll two 6-sided dice. Add this to your attack value. If the total is equal to or greater than the target's defense, the target is hit. The target takes damage equal to the attacking figure's damage value. Click the base of the target that many times. Simple!

The special abilities is where Mage Knight really gets interesting. You will want figures with stackable or compatible special abilities to augment your strategies.

All Mage Knight figures come pre-painted and pre-assembled. Thus, you buy a starter and a few boosters and you are ready to play! This is head and shoulders above Warhammer. How much time must you spend painting and sculpting figures if you want to play Warhammer? If you buy Warhammer, then your hobby is painting and sculpting--not wargaming.

Mage Knight is also reasonably priced. For around $100 you can get a substantial amount of figures and be very competitive.

Mage Knight's larger figures have nice details and great paint jobs too. The Skyguard Griffin, the MK Castles, the other titans--all of them are reasonably priced and have worthy sculpts and paint jobs.

If you are into miniature wargaming or are thinking about starting, Mage Knight is the cheapest, quickest way to get started. I highly recommend it.
